Patricia Shelton, Organizational StrategyPatricia Shelton is an HIV+ woman who wears many hats. She’s a mother of three grown daughters (who between them have six college degrees), a peer educator, advocate, speaker, consultant and certified acupuncturist. She has been interviewed by TV news media, including BBC TV, CBS TV Health Watch, as well as several newspapers, The New York Times, Long Island Newsday, an Associated Press article which was found in many newspapers in the United States; two articles in Body Positive magazine as well as a cover group picture; sat on many executive boards (past and present) and CABS volunteering as much of herself as she possibly can. She was asked to speak at a United Nations Memorial Service for HIV and AIDS. For three years she has been on the board of AIDS, Medicine and Miracles with the title “Organizational Strategy.” Her shining hours were speaking at the Charlotte, North Carolina 2003 AIDS Walk as their keynote speaker and meeting the Rev. Jesse Jackson at an AIDS conference in Philadelphia in 2004. In 2007 she also did outreach at Rev. Al Sharpton’s conference in NYC. August 25-28, 2008 was a rewarding time for her. She was a presenter at the Ryan White 2008 Grantee Meeting and 11th Clinical Update Conference in Washington D.C. Patricia, with three other presenters who were either working in the HIV/AIDS field and/or a PLWA, spoke in a seminar titled, “A Life Interrupted, Is a Life Changed…..Living Positively.” There they spoke on their lives after they found out they were HIV+ or working in the field and how it changed their outlook on life. Three years ago she was interviewed for a documentary which is now showing in movie theatres. “Seen But Not Heard: AIDS and the Untold War Against Black Women,” by Ms. Cyrille Phipps of Brooklyn New York. She presently works at Settlement Health Inc. in Spanish Harlem as a peer educator and enjoys educating and reaching out to her community, especially young girls and ladies and those who are 50 and over, a population she understands and belongs to. |
